Successful Interpretive Hike at Shillinglaw’s Mecan Prairie – Complete with Karner Blue Butterflies!

We had a fantastic group of folks out for an Interpretive Hike led by Dr. Bob Freckmann at John Shillinglaw’s Mecan Prairie last Saturday, August 6th! John has done extensive work to restore the prairie habitat on his property, and took things one step further to conserve the land forever with a conservation easement with NCCT. The group was delighted to see a diversity of plant species, in addition to numerous Karner blue butterflies. Thanks to all who attended, Dr. Freckmann for leading a great hike (complete with jokes), and to John Shillinglaw for allowing the group to tour his spectacular, private property!

NCCT proudly hosted this event in conjunction with the fifth annual Wisconsin Land Trust Days celebration. Wisconsin Land Trust Days is a statewide promotion sponsored by Gathering Waters: Wisconsin’s Alliance for Land Trusts. Wisconsin Land Trust Days brings attention to its member land trusts and the important work they do to protect Wisconsin’s natural resources in the communities they serve. Gathering Waters also helps land trusts, landowners, and communities protect the places that make Wisconsin special. Gathering Waters supports land trusts by advocating for funding, providing land trusts with resources, and creating a network of peers for collaboration.
